What's it all about?

history

heritage

education

commemoration

2023 commemorates the 80th Year since the Americans first came to Bude, Cornwall to train for D-Day on our beaches and cliffs.

We intend to make this a whole Bude town 1940’s weekend.

Re-Enactors and Traders – We want YOU!

Friday to sunday 15th – 17th

september 2023

The event will be based on thought-provoking history, heritage, education, events, displays, talks, music and incredible re-enactors, without whom you would not be able to live the history. This event was last run in 2017 and was very successful with one of the best full-action D-Day landing displays and cliff assault ever seen.

This year will include much more, with the whole town being involved. As always there will be educational programmes for children, the Enigma machine from Bletchley Park, a GI Dance, fantastic living history and re-enactment groups with original WWII vehicles, speeches from prominent figures of the day, a memorial service at The Rangers Stone, a vintage village, belly boarding competition, history trails, art exhibition, original weather maps for D-Day displayed by the Royal Naval Association, the blitz shelter and live music of the era including Lindy Hop dance lessons.  We hope to have a static Spitfire, Trench experience, Blitz experience, talks and a tea dance! As we engage more things, we will let you know but obviously it is top secret and hush-hush until confirmed!

Bude at War commemorates the very special Great Generation whose resilience, stoicism, and ingenious problem-solving allow us to have the freedom that we have today. That freedom and liberty is something that we should never take for granted. We can learn so much from them and we hope that beneath all the activity, you will experience life as it was back then, the challenges that were faced with such courage.

It is an opportunity to step back in time as all the town will be waiting to greet you. Bude at War is run by volunteers and completely free to attend, (some activities/sessions need pre-booked tickets) and a programme can be purchased locally. All we ask is that you come along in the true spirit of the time, dress up, take part and enjoy yourself. It will a wonderful opportunity to commemorate a very pivotal time in history, and enjoy all the Bude has to offer. We are looking forward to a wonderful weekend.

Bude at War is a not-for-profit organisation run by volunteers

This year’s event will cost in the region of £25,000 which we will have to raise the funds for. It is a free event (as there are no entry gates!) for our community and visitors and is aimed at delivering a quality major event which will also help to the economic development of our community outside of main season. There will be some attractions such as the GI Dance and the Enigma Machine from Bletchley Park which will be ticketed and these will be available to be bought in advance. We will announce all new updates and opportunities
